Scrapbooking may feel like just another artform. Maybe it feels like just another type of photo album. While both are true, scrapbooking provides so much more than just art and memory keeping.
To me, scrapbooking has become an outlet of recollection, accomplishment, and of appreciation. The pretty papers and fun stickers are added bonuses! Check out these other 5 benefits of scrapbooking!
1. Scrapbooks Build Self-Esteem
I once read that when you put together a baby book for your child, they will not only want to look at it again and again when they are older, but they will feel like you cherish them and the moments of them. I was skeptical. Why would a baby book provide something that merely showing a photograph could accomplish?
When you create a book with pictures of your kids or your family, you not only communicate that you want to remember those moments, but you are communicating that you want to remember them. You took the time to stare at those photos, display them in a special way, and even journaled what was going on at the time.
I don’t know about you, but as a kid, I would feel pretty special that there was a whole book with me in it! If I were any person, big or small, I think I would feel quite cherished to have a book filled with my pictures and memories too.
2. You Relive Great Times
One of the things I love when I am putting together a book, especially of a trip or vacation, is being able to go back to those moments of playing at the waterpark, exploring that trail, or tasting that yummy food. Even after I’m done creating the book, I still can go back and recall the things that happened.
I find that I even get hungry when seeing a page of a really tasty restaurant experience we had. “Remember how amazing that lobster was?!” as we gawk at the page with the photo from Maine.
“Remember that cool rock formation we hiked by! I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“I forgot about how you were scared to go down that waterslide, but remember you couldn’t stop after that first time? You wanted to do it again and again. Your dad and I were so tired of going up the steps all day,” as we glance upon a photo of dad and her splashing at the bottom that I took.
It brings up all sorts of fun memories that would maybe otherwise be forgotten, or not remembered in quite the same way.
3. Scrapbooks Make Meaningful Gifts
There is nothing better than creating a beautiful album for a parent, grandparent, kid, friend, etc., and watching them look at their book. The time it took to put together their cherished gift along with jogging their memory of great times are a wonderful combination of what makes the present of a scrapbook so priceless.
Rather than piling more things in loved ones’ houses, maybe consider making them a photo album full of their favorite memories, or moments they loved, or of their grandkids. Scrapbooks are sure to be a gift they will treasure for years to come!
4. The Cropping Community
My cropping group just loves spending time together. Whenever we have a weekend of cropping (our word for scrapbooking) or paper crafting together, we all get so excited for it. No one truly understands your craving to get scrapbooks together like others who do it.
I love having our circle of croppers because they are great for asking advice, sharing your stories with, and sharing tools among each other. It is so fun getting an opinion when you can’t settle on a color for matting a photo, or when you need a specific punch for a page that a fellow cropper has that you can borrow, or just someone to pass the scrapping time with. It is truly a unique community of friends, and definitely a wonderful benefit to scrapbooking!
5. The Creative Outlet
Another great benefit to scrapbooking is having a fun, creative outlet. I don’t know about you, but I feel so accomplished when I can scrapbook a beautiful page, get past a group of photos I was stuck on, or eventually finish a satisfying album! Whenever I just need space to think or remember good times, scrapbooking is always helpful for me.
Now, as my daughter gets older, she loves finding her own solitude in scrapbooking with me. She will ask all of the time if she can scrapbook with me. She loves to use my extra photos to create her own pages and feel accomplished!
Scrapbooking is definitely more than just photos in an album. It carries with it so many benefits for you and others. Not only does it provide a creative outlet, but it also helps build self-esteem for kids who are featured in them. It is such a great way to bring you back to those fond memories and moments, and the gifts they make for others can’t be beat!
There are other benefits to scrapbooking outside of these 5 benefits, but these are some key ones I thought of! What benefits do you see in scrapbooking? Comment and share!
